Project Orange Blossom: An Elevated Baby Shower Cookie
The Ask
Cookies for “A Little Cutie is on the Way” Baby Shower
I love when a repeat client reaches back out for more cookies, but I love it even more when they come with an idea - “Would you be open to painting oranges?”
Honestly, I had never painted oranges before. My immediate reaction was, “I’m open to it…let me see what I can do…”
Turns out the reason for this particular ask was that the cookies were for a baby shower with the theme A Little Cutie is on the Way. I was excited to see jump in and start designing!
Behind the Scenes
Usually, I start designing on paper, but this time, I started by sketching on my iPad. I knew stylistically I wanted the oranges to still look organic; so to achieve that look I included a lot of leaves and stems. I landed on 4 variations of orange designs.
Once I was satisfied with the designs on the iPad, I took brush to paper. The two things I kept in mind as I painted were highlights and shadows. This helped add some dimension and character to the designs.

At this point, I sent my test designs over to the client to see if this was on par with their vision.

Not only did the client love the designs, it also inspired them to ask if I could paint orange blossoms.
Since florals are my usual style, I agreed and began work on an orange blossom design.
Orange blossoms are typically in clusters and have a decent amount of leaves surrounding them giving them a different aesthetic than my standard floral designs.
Similar to my orange designs, I landed on 4 variations of orange blossoms.
I love the look of a cohesive set of cookies with slight design variations.
The designs all tie together through the color palette and repeated shapes, but as a whole the set feels a little more elevated.

The Delivery
After days of designing, baking, icing, and painting, it was time to get these cuties delivered.
I personally delivered this set to the client and got to see the beautiful pink and orange decor they’d be displayed with. Of course, they had actual mandarin oranges (aka Cuties) included in the decor as well.
The Results
The baby shower cookies were a hit! I bumped into the client who received these cookies at a market months later and she was still raving about how much everyone who attended the shower loved the cookies.
“OMGGGGGG, RACHEL! These are just the cutest! You knock it out of the park every time!”
